What is a Relay? A relay is an electromagnetic switch that is used to control a large current circuit with a smaller current signal. In a car, relays are commonly found in circuits where high-power devices need to be controlled. When a small current flows through the relay’s coil, it generates a magnetic field that pulls the relay’s switch, closing the circuit and allowing the larger current to flow through to the connected device. The main function of a relay in a car is to control high-power components like the headlights, cooling fans, fuel pump, and windshield wipers. For example, in many cars, the power to the headlights is controlled by a relay. A small current from the headlight switch flows to the relay, which then allows a much larger current to flow to the headlight bulbs.
