What is a Motor Overload Relay? A Motor Overload Relay is a safety device designed to protect an electric motor from damage caused by electrical overloads. When a motor is overloaded, its current exceeds safe operating levels, which can lead to overheating, insulation breakdown, and eventual motor failure. Overload relays monitor the current flowing through the motor circuit, and when the current exceeds a predefined threshold, the relay disconnects the motor from the power supply to prevent damage. The relay works by either using a thermal mechanism, a magnetic trip, or an electronic circuit to monitor the motor’s current.
