This type of relay operates by using semiconductors such as thyristors, triacs, and opto-isolators. These components provide the necessary switching action without any physical movement, which eliminates wear and tear on mechanical parts, thereby offering a long lifespan compared to traditional mechanical relays. The SSR functions by accepting an input signal, typically from a low-voltage control circuit such as a microcontroller or a thermostat, and using this input to activate a semiconductor that opens or closes the circuit to a high-voltage load.
