A general-purpose relay is an essential electrical component found in countless applications across industrial, automotive, and consumer electronics sectors. Its primary function is to control the flow of electricity within a circuit by using a low-power signal to switch high-power circuits on and off. This allows users to control larger loads without needing to handle dangerous high-current or high-voltage components directly. What is a General-purpose Relay? A general-purpose relay consists of several key components: the coil, armature, contacts, and spring. The coil is typically wound around a metal core and is the part of the relay that receives electrical current. When current flows through the coil, it generates a magnetic field, which in turn attracts the armature, a movable part that is connected to the contacts. This attraction causes the armature to change the state of the contacts—either closing or opening them depending on the relay’s design. In its normal state, the contacts are either normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC). A normally open relay will allow the circuit to be open (off) when the relay is not energized and will close (turn on) when energized. Conversely, a normally closed relay keeps the circuit closed (on) in its default state and will open (turn off) when energized. These configurations allow for flexible control of various devices.
