LOTO equipment refers to the set of tools and devices used to physically lock and label machinery or energy sources to prevent accidental startup. It includes padlocks, lockout hasps, valve lockouts, circuit breaker lockouts, cable lockouts, and safety tags. These devices work together to isolate energy sources—such as electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, or thermal energy—ensuring that workers are fully protected while performing maintenance or service operations. The lockout aspect of LOTO involves applying a physical device, like a padlock, to the energy-isolating switch or valve. This ensures that the machine cannot be turned on until the lock is removed by the authorized personnel who placed it. Each worker has their own uniquely keyed lock, which guarantees accountability and personal safety. The tagout aspect, on the other hand, involves placing a warning label on the locked device. This tag communicates that the machine is currently under maintenance and should not be operated. The combination of both lock and tag provides a clear visual and physical warning system.
