Unlike normally closed thermostats, which complete a circuit when the temperature falls below a set point, normally open thermostats do the opposite. They break the circuit when the temperature rises above the set point. How Does it Work? The fundamental principle behind a normally open thermostat is the use of a bimetallic strip. This strip is made of two different metals bonded together, each with a different coefficient of thermal expansion. When the temperature changes, one metal expands or contracts more than the other, causing the strip to bend.
